Bulldogs secure second place with standout performances |
Flagler Palm Coast High School's wrestling team delivered an impressive performance at the 40th annual Flagler Rotary Invitational, held on January 30-31 at their home gym.
Leading the charge, junior Trey Twilley clinched the 132-pound championship and was honored as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Twilley dominated his matches, including a decisive 11-2 major decision in the quarterfinals and a hard-fought 10-9 victory in the finals.
Reflecting on his achievement, Twilley expressed, "I feel amazing. Words can't express how I'm feeling right now."
While Twilley was the sole champion for FPC, the Bulldogs showcased depth with eight other wrestlers placing in the top five of their respective weight classes.
Notable performances included sophomore Kevin McLean as runner-up at 120 pounds, senior Michael Fries and freshman Jacob Hald securing third places at 150 and 106 pounds respectively, and junior Braden Dailey placing fourth at 113 pounds.
These collective efforts propelled FPC to a commendable second-place finish overall, trailing only tournament champion Oviedo Hagerty.
The invitational saw a record participation of 39 teams, underscoring its significance in the wrestling community.
FPC coach David Bossardet remarked, "We had 39 teams, and I don't think we could have fit any more. I think this is as big as we can go."
Looking ahead, the Bulldogs aim to build on this momentum as they prepare for upcoming regional and state competitions.
Coach Bossardet emphasized the importance of the Rotary Invitational, stating, "It gives us a gauge to see where we are and where we need to be three weeks from now."
As the season progresses, the FPC wrestling team remains focused on achieving greater success and representing their community with pride. |
